Benelli, a Chinese-owned motorcycle brand with Italian roots, has been known for its entry-level adventure bike, the TRK 502, since its debut in 2017. Initially, the TRK 502 impressed with features ahead of its time. However, as the 400cc to 500cc adventure-touring machines evolved rapidly, the TRK 502X began to show its age. New offerings from both new and established players, like the KTM 390 Adventure, Royal Enfield Himalayan, and CF Moto Ibex 450, have emphasized off-road performance. Meanwhile, bikes like the Honda NX500 focus on long-distance touring capabilities.

In response to this competitive landscape, Benelli has reinvented its adventure bike, unveiling the TRK 552X for the 2024 model year. The new model builds on the strengths of its predecessor while incorporating significant updates and improvements.

A Modernized Design

The TRK 552X features a complete overhaul of its design. Gone are the halogen headlights, replaced by a modern dual-pod LED headlight assembly. The front fascia has been sharpened with a more aggressive beak and a larger windscreen, giving the bike a contemporary and assertive look. The fairings are wider and blend seamlessly with the large fuel tank, enhancing the bike's robust presence.

Advanced Cockpit Features

One of the most notable upgrades is in the cockpit. The outdated analog-digital display has been replaced with a full-color TFT screen, bringing the TRK 552X in line with its competitors. This new display offers features such as smartphone pairing and a built-in tire pressure monitoring system, providing riders with essential information and connectivity on the go.

Enhanced Performance

The new TRK 552X is powered by a 550cc parallel-twin engine that produces a respectable 60 horsepower and 40.5 pound-feet of torque. This power output positions the TRK 552X at the intersection of entry-level and middleweight adventure segments. Additionally, Benelli has upgraded the crankshaft to a 270-degree configuration, similar to those found in Yamaha and Suzuki middleweight twins, resulting in smoother and more refined power delivery.

Simplified Yet Effective Technology

Despite the comprehensive upgrades, Benelli has kept the technology simple on the TRK 552X. The bike has dual-channel ABS but lacks advanced ride modes or other electronic aids. This approach suggests that Benelli aims to balance on-road performance with go-anywhere capability without overwhelming riders with complex electronics.

Suspension and Wheels

The TRK 552X is equipped with sophisticated Marzocchi suspension, offering a range of adjustability both front and rear. This setup provides a comfortable and controlled ride over various terrains. The bike features a 19-17 spoked wheel combination, wrapped in Metzeler Tourance rubber, further enhancing its versatility for both on-road and light off-road adventures.

Market Position and Future Prospects

Currently, the TRK 552X has been released in China, with potential plans to expand to other markets based on its success. In the global ADV segment, competition is fiercer than ever, with Benelli facing stiff competition from brands like Royal Enfield, CFMoto, and others. By focusing on a blend of power, modern design, and essential features, Benelli aims to carve out a niche for the TRK 552X among adventure-touring enthusiasts.

The Benelli TRK 552X represents a significant leap forward from its predecessor, the TRK 502X. With its modernized design, advanced cockpit features, enhanced performance, and balanced approach to technology, the TRK 552X is well-positioned to attract attention in the competitive adventure-touring market. Whether these improvements will be enough to reestablish the TRK nameplate among ADV enthusiasts remains to be seen. As the market evolves, only time will tell if the TRK 552X can secure its place in the adventure-touring segment
