In Nepal, having a two-wheeler is an ideal way to get around the busy streets. But to be road legal, it has to have its taxes renewed annually, just like any other vehicle. Here's an introduction to understanding Nepal's two-wheeler fee on renewal so you can drive safely and avoid fines.

Understanding the Rates

The engine capacity (CC) of a two-wheeler determines the tax you must pay. The current rates (as of Fiscal Year 2080–81) are broken down as follows:

  • Up to 125cc: Rs. 3,000
  • 125cc to 150cc: Rs. 5,000
  • 150cc to 225cc: Rs. 6,500
  • 225cc to 400cc: Rs. 11,000
  • 400cc to 650cc: Rs. 20,000
  • 650cc and above: Rs. 30,000

Renewal Charges: For two-wheelers, there is an additional renewal fee of Rs. 100 in addition to the tax. The processing charge for the renewal is an additional cost.

Beware the Penalties!

Paying your taxes on time is crucial. There are penalties for delays:

  • 5% fine from Baisakh 1 to Baisakh 30 (mid-April to mid-May)
  • 10% fine from Jestha 1 to Asar 15 (mid-May to mid-July)
  • 20%fine from Asar 16 to Asar end (mid-July)
  • 32% fine onwards from Shrawan (July-August)

The Renewal Process

The following things are required for a smooth renewal:

  • Gather Documents: Get the valid insurance documents and the blue book (registration document) for your two-wheeler prepared.
  • Visit the Office: Head to your local Department of Transport Management (DoTM) office.
  • Make the Payment: At the right counter, pay the renewal charge and calculated tax. They may take payments online or in cash.
  • Renewal Complete: The Department Of Traffic Management(DOTM) will renew your blue book with the most recent tax validity after the payment has been validated.
