As the whole world looks towards alternative solutions for fossil fuels, Nepal too has certainly dived into it as new electric vehicles pop up in the streets everyday like mushrooms. We’ve even gone on and made a whole electric bike, Yatri translating to traveler, in Nepal. Nepal being a giant colony of two wheeler commuters, we’ve not stopped in providing more options for riders everyday. Often debated for longevity and reliability, will the country finally make the giant switch from petroleum to electric? Even if it does, how will it answer the queries that keep on revving across riders’ minds drenched in decades of fossil fuel dependency?

Why electric scooters and why now and why Nepal?

Fuel prices in recent times have skyrocketed as it’s inflated more than 38% in the past 6 months alone. Petrol prices went up from NPR 134 to NPR 189 between January and November 2022 with Nepal Oil Corporation still reporting losses. Pollution too has fogged up the globe in recent years raising environmental concerns all over the world. On dry days the major cities are covered up in smog from the dust and smoke from fuel guzzling machines scooting around.

Electric vehicles like electric scooters and electric bikes, seen as a giant stone that will kill these two troublemaking birds, have arrived in a huge wave as new innovations and existing brands venture into alternative power solutions.

Nepal’s lifestyle is heavily reliant on the usage of two wheelers which opens up a huge market for automobile dealers to capitalize on. As major commuting machines that eliminate physical stress especially in this land of vast geographic diversity, Nepal will have to make this switch to electric scooters and the sooner we do it the better Scooters specifically because they provide more mobility, storage options and fluidity compared to bikes. They are becoming a rather popular choice amongst commuters as they escape the gender stereotype with their functionality and evolving aesthetics.

On top of all this, road and vehicle tax along with maintenance costs are all cut down to negligible amounts compared to our favorite combustion engines, which we will discuss in detail below.

Why is a battery powered machine so expensive?

Lets get straight to pure mathematics here, a normal scooter’s road tax and insurance cost is between NRS 5000 to NRS 6000 per year and almost every month the servicing cost adds up to an average of 15000 per year, taking the expenses upwards of 20 thousands for a scooter owner. Adding those cost to the fuel expenses incurred averages to around 25k in a calendar year. So even after spending more than 300k on your premium scooter, your expenses are still around 15-20% of your scooter’s total valuation. If you ride it for more than 4 years you’ll end up spending more than the scooter itself.

On the other hand, the

Where do I find a fuel station for this thing?

Another major question I find being discussed amongst people looking to switch from petroleum to electric is the refill. Petroleum powered bikes and scooters fitted with fuel tanks ranging from 4 liters to 18 liters have provided an average commuting range of more than 200 kilometers to riders. Taking them exactly around Pokhara for a weekend getaway on their own ride.

With low end commuter motorbikes like Honda Shine, Bajaj Discover going up to more than 700 kilometers on a full tank, people are bound to be shocked to see a 70 kilometer range on a fully charged electric scooter.

We have to agree that alternative fuel is still an evolving technology with companies searching for innovative solutions to maximize range and make charging points more accessible like fuel stations. Companies like Niu and Segway now have scooters that can go more than 150 kilometers on full charge. Super-soco claims to have the highest range on an electric two wheeler with 200kms on the fully charged TC wanderer. On top of that, major automobile engineers are working to reduce charging times or offer replaceable and regenerative batteries to make mobility much easier on these machines.

Is it powerful enough to take me to my destination? And will i find any workshops on the way?

I stumbled upon this electric bike from Genius EV, the X46, with a naked sport inspired body and a top speed of 120km/h as claimed by the company. The engine also has a max motor power or 13 Kilowatts in peak performance mode, putting that into perspective, the Pulsar 200 NS packs a motor performance of around 19 Kilowatts and top speed off around 130km/h. The Genius X46 bike also has three riding modes for economy, street and race modes with a hill-assist system that maintains the brake pressure for a set period of time while switching from brakes to the accelerator and only releases the brake once the acceleration is applied. While all this looks very good on paper, the Genius still remains to prove it on the road as it has not made much noise since hitting the market.

Segway Ninebot E100 Electric Scooter Red

Front and rear disc brakes on newer high end scooters like Niu MQiGT with cruise control and 24X7 NIUAPP connectivity certainly do look competitive on paper, these services and features will receive upgrades as more and more people are embedded into the electric commune. It like a play to win game where you cant wait around for the final, you have to give in to take something out of it.

Which one is the right choice and why are there so many of them?

As previously mentioned, the electric options seem to be increasing by the day. With goverment EV friendly in the wake of the rising climate crises, the electric vehicle wave will certainly hit stronger as the humankind looks more determined to roll back the damages. Excise duties and customs to be lowered in comparison to fuel engines and incentivizing innovation to make the electric revolution more accessible, we can certainly expect the market to expand to double of what it is now by 2025.

With current favorite brand names like Niu, Segway and household name Yatri - other companies like Super-soco and Aima finding their own place in the market as the customer have diverse needs across the country. Some need a daily commuter that just travels 20kms per day from home to office and back but require storage space while some need sheer performance on a machine engineered to zap through the streets in the most lightweight manner as possible. With overall features leaning towards Niu MQiGT and Segway E100 we have compiled a list of some amazing electric two wheelers and what they offer in the blog below, please make sure you check it out.
