Vehicle Description

The long-awaited Ducati DesertX has finally arrived, filling a void in the motorcycle market that enthusiasts have yearned for over the years. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Cagiva Elefant of the 1990s, the DesertX not only pays homage to its Ducati lineage but also brings a refreshing ruggedness to the adventure motorcycle segment. In this article, we will delve into the captivating design, impressive features, and the on-road and off-road prowess of this new Ducati offering.

Aesthetics and Design:

The DesertX is undeniably a head-turner with its striking design that nods to the Cagiva Elefant, especially in its face and overall silhouette. The twin circular LED headlamps and a tall windscreen give the bike an instantly recognizable and distinctive appearance. Unlike many adventure bikes, the 21-litre fuel tank manages to maintain a slim profile where the rider's knees interact, contributing to a comfortable riding experience. The rear section is elegantly simple, featuring a sleek oval LED tail-lamp that adds to the bike's sense of purpose and ruggedness.

Ducati Backbone:

Beneath the aesthetically pleasing exterior lies a traditional trellis frame, emphasizing Ducati's expertise in working with metal tubes. Despite the new chassis, the DesertX retains the familiar 937cc liquid-cooled L-twin engine, known for its reliability and performance across various Ducati models. The DesertX boasts a substantial wheelbase of 1,608mm, surprisingly not translating into a cumbersome or lazy feel during rides. Impressively, the bike's off-road capabilities shine through with its 21-inch/18-inch wheel sizes, 230mm front and 220mm rear suspension travel, and 250mm ground clearance.

On and Off the Road:

The DesertX excels both on and off the road, showcasing its versatility. Riding off-road at the World Ducati Week, the bike felt tall yet remarkably easy to handle and light on its feet. The standing-up ergonomics are well-balanced, and the generous suspension travel contributes to its off-road prowess. Equipped with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, the DesertX demonstrated commendable performance in dry dirt conditions. On paved roads, the bike's handling proved agile, with smooth transitions and stability when leaned over.

Engine Performance:

Powered by the familiar 937cc L-twin engine, the Desert X delivers 110hp and 92Nm of torque, placing it in the same ballpark as its Ducati siblings. However, the engine's character is distinctively muted and mellow, providing a linear power delivery. While lacking the aggressive punch of some Ducati counterparts, this approachable nature makes the Desert X appealing to a broader audience. Heat management and a somewhat heavy hydraulic clutch are noted drawbacks, but these may be minor inconveniences considering the overall package.

Feature-Rich and Tech-Savvy:

The Desert X is not just about looks and performance; it's also packed with cutting-edge technology. The bike boasts an array of electronic features, including a vertical TFT display, six customizable riding modes, four power modes, multi-level traction control, wheelie control, cornering ABS, and more. With a comprehensive suite of rider assists, the Desert X stands out as one of the best-equipped motorcycles in its segment. Luxuries such as an up/down quickshifter, cruise control, and heated grips further enhance the riding experience.
