Vehicle Description
Ducati, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer renowned for its powerful and stylish bikes, has taken a bold step into the rallye-raid segment with the 2024 Ducati DesertX Rally. This off-road beast is not just a visual makeover; it's a purpose-built machine that draws inspiration from the victorious Antoine Meo's factory-backed competition bike, demonstrating its prowess in the challenging terrains of the Iron Road Prologue at the Erzbergrodeo.
Engine & Performance:
At the heart of the DesertX Rally lies the 937cc Testastretta 11° engine, a powerhouse shared with Ducati's other iconic models. Delivering an impressive 110hp at 9,250rpm and 92Nm at 6,500rpm, this L-twin engine retains Ducati's signature 90-degree layout and desmodromic valvetrain. The transmission features adventure bike ratios, ensuring optimal performance both on and off the road. A restricted version catering to A2 license holders is also available.
The bike offers a multitude of riding modes, including Sport, Touring, Urban, Wet, Enduro, and Rally, each tailored to specific riding conditions. With the addition of Ducati's DQS quickshifter, the DesertX Rally promises a seamless and exhilarating riding experience.
Handling & Suspension:
The DesertX Rally's suspension system is where it truly separates itself from the standard DesertX. The front KYB forks are not only 2mm larger but also boast motocross-style closed-cartridge internals, enhancing damping consistency. The front suspension travel has been increased to 250mm, and the forks are treated with a DLC coating for durability.
The rear features a KYB shock with adjustable preload, high- and low-speed compression damping adjustment, and adjustable rebound. With a stiffer spring and 240mm of wheel travel, the DesertX Rally sits higher, boasting 280mm of ground clearance and a seat height of 910mm.
The wheels, though maintaining the same diameter, have been optimized for off-road performance. The narrower back wheel, machined solid aluminum hubs, carbon steel spokes, and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires contribute to improved grip.
Comfort & Economy:
The DesertX Rally caters to adventure enthusiasts with its exclusive 910mm seat height, which may challenge those with shorter legs. The seat, gear shifter, and brake pedal have been specially designed for off-road use, offering superior grip and adjustability.
Ducati has yet to release fuel efficiency figures, but with identical engine settings and gearing to the standard DesertX, the Rally is expected to deliver a comparable range of around 370 km on its 21-liter tank.
Equipment:
The DesertX Rally comes equipped with a forged carbon fiber sump guard, pre-colored bodywork with PVC stickers for durability, and an adjustable Öhlins steering damper. Optional Termignoni exhausts, an array of visual modes on the 5-inch TFT dash, and connectivity for smartphones enhance the bike's functionality and style.
In the competitive middleweight adventure bike segment, the DesertX Rally faces off against formidable rivals like the KTM 890 Adventure R, BMW F900GS Adventure, and Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Rally. While some may offer similar power and off-road capabilities, the Ducati stands out with its distinctive design and rally-winning pedigree.
The Ducati DesertX Rally is not merely a cosmetic makeover; it's a purpose-built rallye-raid machine that pays homage to Ducati's racing legacy. With a potent engine, revamped suspension, and a host of off-road features, it's a formidable contender in the middleweight adventure bike segment, ready to conquer both the urban jungle and the untamed wilderness.
