Vehicle Description
The Triumph Scrambler 400X is not simply a Speed 400 with a few trendy retro parts thrown at it. This pleasingly styled new scrambler has its own frame, wheelbase, and chassis geometry, setting it apart from its sibling. It boasts a 19-inch off-road-biased front wheel and Metzeler Karoo rubber, making it ready for any terrain.
While it shares the Speed’s TR Series 398cc single-cylinder engine, producing 39.5 hp at 8,000 rpm and 27.7 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,500 rpm, the Scrambler 400X is much more than a cosmetic rehash. Its wheels (100/90-19 front and 140/80-17 rear) and riding stance are completely different, providing a unique riding experience.
The most striking difference is in the styling. The new twin exhausts exude scrambler appeal, and the two-section ribbed bench seat adds a touch of retro class. Hand guards, taller and wider handlebars for off-road exploration, and the larger-diameter front wheel wrapped in dirt-biased rubber give this bike a powerful presence. Despite its premium finish, the Scrambler 400X is priced affordably.
Once on board, the differences are obvious. The 32.9-inch seat is higher than the Speed 400’s 31.1 inches, offering a commanding view and a more upright riding position. The classic scrambler-style handlebars position your hands wide and high, giving the sensation of riding a larger bike. The spacious seating arrangement is comfortable even for tall riders, and the 43mm Big Piston fork and monoshock rear suspension soak up road imperfections with ease. With 5.9 inches (150mm) of travel front and rear, the Scrambler 400X handles pockmarked surfaces without compromising stability.
The ride is simply fun, with plenty of suspension movement keeping the 400X flowing nicely. The balance between compliance and control is perfect for daily riding. The wheelbase is longer than the Speed 400, and the weight has increased from 375 pounds to 395. Despite the larger-diameter front wheel, the wide handlebars provide ample leverage, making steering precise and responsive.
On tight, twisty asphalt, the Scrambler 400X performs like a little supermoto, allowing you to navigate safely and swiftly. In city traffic, its taller stance and wide handlebars give it a commanding presence, making it easy to carve through congestion. The Scrambler 400X is a joy to ride in urban environments, offering fun and agility despite its 39.5 hp.
The Scrambler 400X features a ByBre front brake caliper with a larger 320mm disc (compared to the Speed 400’s 300mm) and a 230mm rear disc. For those seeking off-road adventures, ABS can be turned off, enhancing its versatility.
The Triumph Scrambler 400X is the ideal choice for those who like to explore gravel tracks occasionally. Its taller stance and scrambler styling make it more commanding in urban settings, while the retro vibe adds a touch of nostalgia. With its superior suspension, robust brakes, and off-road capabilities, the Scrambler 400X is built for adventure.
