Vehicle Description
Engine & Performance
Introducing the 2024 Triumph Speed 400, powered by a 398cc TR-series single-cylinder engine. This liquid-cooled DOHC motor delivers an impressive 40PS (39.5bhp) at 8000rpm. Triumph has cleverly designed the engine to blend modern performance with retro aesthetics, featuring machined fins and a twin-skinned exhaust that mimics an air-cooled look. The hidden radiator and smart exhaust design contribute to its timeless appearance.
On the road, the Speed 400 strikes a perfect balance between retro charm and modern efficiency. The counter-rotating balance shaft ensures smooth operation, while the torque-assist clutch and seamless gearbox make for an effortless ride. The power builds steadily, with a notable surge around 6000rpm, propelling the bike forward until the limiter kicks in at 9500rpm. The ride-by-wire throttle system, coupled with traction control, enhances control and safety, although there are no selectable riding modes.
Handling, Weight, and Suspension
The Speed 400 features a ‘hybrid’ frame constructed from tubular steel, complemented by a bolt-on steel subframe and an eye-catching cast aluminum swingarm. With a wheelbase of 1377mm, a steep rake of 24.6 degrees, and a trail of 102mm, the Speed 400 is agile and sporty. Weighing in at just 170kg, it’s nimble and responsive, making it a joy to ride on twisty mountain roads.
Equipped with 17-inch cast wheels and Metzeler M9RR sports tyres (110/70 front and 150/60 rear), the Speed 400 handles with precision and stability. The 43mm upside-down forks with Big Piston internals and the monoshock rear suspension offer a remarkably smooth ride, absorbing bumps and potholes with ease. The suspension setup is well-balanced, providing both comfort and composure, even for heavier riders.
Comfort & Economy
Despite its compact appearance, the Speed 400 offers ample comfort for average-sized riders. The 790mm (31.1-inch) seat height, combined with its slim and lightweight design, ensures that riders of all sizes feel at home. However, there is no option for lowering the seat or adjusting the rear suspension to accommodate shorter riders.
Triumph claims an impressive fuel economy of 34.31 km/l, giving the Speed 400 a theoretical range of 370 km from its 13-litre fuel tank. Even after a day of spirited riding, the bike still managed to estimate nearly 31 km/l, showcasing its efficiency.
The Speed 400 features an analogue speedometer with a small LCD panel displaying revs, gear position, fuel gauge, and trip meter, including a remaining fuel range estimator. A USB-C power socket is conveniently located next to the clocks, though there is no Bluetooth connectivity.
Brakes
The Speed 400 is equipped with a single 300mm disc and a four-piston ByBre radially mounted caliper at the front, paired with a 230mm disc and a single-piston caliper at the rear. The braking system, complete with braided lines and a non-lean-sensitive ABS, delivers strong stopping power with excellent bite and feel. The chassis remains stable and composed even under hard braking.
The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 marks an outstanding debut in the A2-class category. It seamlessly combines retro aesthetics with modern performance, making it a delightful ride for both new and experienced riders. Triumph has created a bike that looks and feels like a Triumph, without compromising on quality or performance.
While the short gearing may be a minor concern for high-speed cruising, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience. The Triumph Speed 400 is a perfect blend of style and substance, offering an engaging and enjoyable ride that lives up to the brand’s prestigious reputation.
